Day one hundred fifty-eight
I woke up this morning not feeling 100%, probably because I am trying to do too much and not getting enough rest. I still have a lot to accomplish, so I prayed that the Lord would bless me with the ability to get the work done that I need to and to get the rest my body needs. I just hope that the work that I think I need to get done is the same work the Lord thinks I need to get done!
An Introduction to the Historical Books
The next twelve books in the Old Testament, starting with the Book of Joshua and ending with Esther, are considered the Historical Books. They cover nearly 1000 years of Israelite history and include:
Israel's entrance into the land of Canaan under the leadership of Joshua
Israel's initial capture of the land
The ups and downs of life during the rule of judges and kings
The tragic exiles of the nothern and southern kingdoms
And the glorious return from exile to the land of Israel
The Book of Joshua (A little background information)
The Book of Joshua tells of the conquest of the land of Canaan, although not all of the territory is secured to the Israelites during this period. It then proceeds with the division of the Promised Land into inheritances for each of the tribes and concludes with Joshua’s final instructions and warnings to the people.
In this book, we find that Moses, the great leader of Israel has died and a new leader named Joshua has been appointed to lead the nation of Israel into Canaan. After 40 years of wandering in the wilderness, Israel is about to take possession of the land which God promised Abraham centuries earlier (Gen. 12:7). This book is about the battles Israel faced in order to claim that promise from God. Joshua is a book of warfare, suffering and great victories. It is a book that can teach the modern Christian much about obtaining spiritual victory in your life. I know I can use more spiritual victories in my life!
So I look forward to starting a more in depth discussion about the Book of Joshua tomorrow and sharing what I have learned. Hopefully I will be filling better!
